Learning the Bible names of God is exciting because they help us come to know Him better!
In Bible times, names meant more than a label to call someone. They were descriptive of character and gave identity. The same goes for the names of God in the Bible. They have meaning.
Our God is Elohim, our Creator, but the Bible also calls Him our Father. He is both Jehovah Jireh, the LORD Our Provider, and Jehovah Shammah, the LORD Who is There.
Each points us to His character and identity; they are based upon His attributes displayed as He interacts with mankind within the Biblical narrative and within our own stories too. God desires to be known.
We'll discover the meaning of many of these Bible names of God along with what they tell us about His character and how we can use them to know Him better and call upon Him in prayer.
There is something more intimate and personal when we use someone's name in conversation. The same is true when we come to God in prayer.
Are you in need of a hero? Call upon El Gibbor, Mighty God Who Rescues. Are you needing to sense God's nearness? Call upon Elohei Mikkarov.
We all have our different names we are called such as Mom or Dad, Sister or Brother, Teacher, Doctor, Nurse, Mr. Whomever, our given name, etc. We are more than what can be summed up in one name, and God's identity cannot be summed up in a single name either.
The Bible names of God are so much more than just a name.
"The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
The righteous runs into it and is safe."
Proverbs 18:10
This is not an all-inclusive list. I have included the more common Bible names of God along with others I have come across in my own Bible study time.
I hope you will take time to go to Scripture and read a few of the verses given as examples of each and where these Bible names of God are used.
Many of the Hebrew Bible names of God begin with "El" which basically means God. These two letters set Him apart from all other beings and declare He is mighty!
Four of the most common of these include:
Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth." Attributes: Mighty, Plural form of El pointing to the Trinity - 3 in 1 Other references for Elohim include:
|
Genesis 17:1 - "Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty [El Shaddai]; Walk before Me, and be blameless." Attributes: All-powerful, Enough, Owner of all Other References:
|
Genesis 14:20 "And blessed be God Most High (El Elyon), Who has delivered your enemies into your hand. He gave him a tenth of all." Attributes: Exalted above all, Absolute right to Lordship, Sovereign Other reference:
|
Genesis 16:13 "Then she (Hagar) called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees me”(El Roi); for she said, “Have I even seen Him here and lived after He saw me?” Attributes: All-knowing, Attentive Other references:
|
Of all the Bible names of God, this is His personal name He gives to Moses out of the burning bush in Exodus 3:14 -
"God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
When you see LORD in all capital letters in your Bible, this is the name to which it is referring. No longer is God addressed only by His position of Who He is or a title given to Him because of His character, this is a name denoting His desire for relationship with us. More about Yahweh/Jehovah.
The most well-known of the Yahweh/Jehovah Bible names of God include:
Genesis 22:14 "And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” |
Exodus 17:15 "And Moses built an altar and named it The Lord is My Banner; |
Exodus 15:26 "And He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer.” |
Isaiah 1:24 "Therefore the Lord God of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah, I will gain satisfaction from My foes; I will take revenge against My enemies." |
Judges 6:23-24 "Then the Lord said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites." |
One of my favorites is
Ezekiel 48:35 "The city shall be eighteen thousand cubits all around; and the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘The Lord is there.’” |
A few more common Bible names of God include:
Mark 14:36 "And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”
Romans 8:15 "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Galatians 4:6 "Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Genesis 15:1 "After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.”
Numbers 14:17 "But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared,"
Isaiah 44:6 “This is what the Lord says, He who is the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of armies:" ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me."
Revelation 21:6- "Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life, without cost."
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel."
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
Matthew 1:21 "She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Even beyond the many Bible names of God, Scripture also includes other illustrations pointing us to God's character and identity.
God is...

Malachi 3:2-3 “But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver” |
Jeremiah 17:13 "Lord, the hope of Israel, All who abandon You will be put to shame. Those who turn [a]away on earth will be written down, Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, that is the Lord." John 4:7-17 John 7:37-39 |
