An Easter Object Lesson

This object lesson takes a simple, empty Easter egg and teaches kids as well as adults the importance of renewing our "wow factor" of the Easter story.

It's perfect for Easter Sunday whether it's with your family sharing the story of the resurrection or with your small group at church!

Topic:  The Wonder of the Resurrection

Object Lesson Title:  The Wow Factor of Easter

Object: An empty Easter egg

Bible Verses: John 20:1-8

Key Takeaway: We may need to renew our wonder or WOW over the amazing story of God's love demonstrated through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed.” - John 20:8

Christian object lesson:

Holding an empty Easter egg in your hand, tell the kids you have brought a surprise to show them.  Allow them time to guess what is in your hands.  “Yes, it is an Easter egg because today is Easter, and we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead!”

Ask them to guess what may be inside the egg.  They may guess candy or money, but some will probably say it’s empty because they have heard this illustration before to represent the empty grave, and they won’t be surprised.  Explain that many times when we have heard something over and over like the story of Easter, we lose the wonder of it.  We’ve lost our “Wow factor”. [Each time you say “wow”, make your mouth like the letter O and hold up three fingers on each side of your face to make “WOW”.]

Have kids brainstorm “wow factors” or “wonders” all around us.  Examples may include:  caterpillars changing into butterflies, an acorn growing into a giant oak tree, how God created our eyes to see colors unlike most animals.

Turn to John 20:1-8 now and read John’s account of that first Easter morning.  Verse 8 says, “Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed.”

This was John’s “Wow” moment.  He saw, and he believed.  That’s all God asks us to do.  He wants us to see Him for Who He is, to know He is real and loves us so much!

We may not see Jesus with our eyes like John did, but we can see and know Him with our hearts.  Turn back to John 1:12 – “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,” NASB.

That’s us!  We can become children of God, because He loved us so much that He sent His only begotten Son, that if we believe, trust in Him with our life here every day and our life forever, He will give us eternal life; we do not have to perish.  Have kids quote or look up John 3:16; yes, it was John God used to write those words!

Remind kids that as they hunt Easter eggs to remember the “WOW”, the wonder of the Easter story and when they see the color red, to know they can be a disciple Jesus loves just like the apostle John.

We try to check others' faith statements and make sure they do profess Jesus Christ as God's Son and salvation is found only in Him. It must, however, be your responsibility to personally dig into God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to be your first and final teacher on all subjects.
