Object Lesson on Peace

This Bible object lesson on peace demonstrates how God's presence gives us a grip on life even in the midst of the troubling circumstances.  This is an active and fun Bible lesson to do with any age!  I created it for my 4th-6th graders for a Wednesday night Bible lesson, and they had a blast!

Life can seem to push us around with troubles, fear, anxiousness and worry.  God offers us His presence and His peace which help us stand fast no matter the circumstances.

get a Grip, Don't Slip!
An Object Lesson on Peace

Jesus often taught with parables.  A Bible object lesson is similar in that it takes an earthly object and uses it to teach a spiritual lesson.

Bible Lesson: Like shoes, God's peace helps us not be moved by life's troubles.

Lesson Title:  Get a Grip, Don't Slip!

Object:  Socks and Shoes

Primary Scriptures: Romans 5:1, Mark 4:35-41

Main Point:  When we put on God's peace, we won't slip into worry, anxiousness and fear.  We can stand fast, grounded in God's presence.

Object Lesson on Peace:

Slip and Slide War

We did this inside on slick floors. It could be done outside on an actual “slip & slide” surface barefooted!

Have everyone take their shoes off and have on socks. (You may need to bring extra socks to share with some.) Divide into two teams and draw two lines or goals on each end of the area you are using. Have teams line up in pairs facing each other placing hands on each others shoulders.

When you say begin, they are to try pushing the other team member across the goal line behind them. This is opposite of tug of war. The team that gets the most across their goal line wins.

Ask what was hard about the game. (Socks slipped; couldn’t get a grip)

What would have helped them? (shoes)

Discussion
Bible Object Lesson on Peace

Ask what would happen if a football player wore regular shoes out onto the field rather than cleats. What is different about cleats?

Roman soldiers also wore shoes with spikes that helped them stand firm as their shoes gripped the ground.

God’s peace helps us stand firm even in the storms of life. When we know Jesus as our savior we receive peace with God and the peace of God.

Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:10 “For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled will we be saved by His life!”

Colossians 1:21-22 “Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds because of your evil actions. But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him”

Before receiving Jesus as our Savior, we were hostile and alienated from God –enemies by our choice. But when we receive Jesus, we are reconciled, brought back in relationship with God, and are therefore at peace and no longer war.

Knowing that we have peace with God helps us stand firm. Remember God is greater – 1 John 4:4 “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” Jesus has already been victorious over Satan.

The peace of God helps us stand firm in the storms of life. Remember the story of when Jesus calmed the storm by saying “Peace, be still.”?  Well, He does the same when difficulties and hard times come into our lives.

Bible Story for Object Lesson on Peace

"On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Have different students volunteer ahead of class to look up and read the following verses about the peace of God and how this piece of the armor of God helps us stand firm when life gets tough:

Phil 4:6-7

John 14:27

John 16:33

Isaiah 26:3

2 Thessalonians 3:16

4 "Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.[a]

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."

Philippians 4:4-8 NLT

Prayer time
Object Lesson on Peace

Have everyone remove their shoes.  Form a circle and lead in prayer:

Father, we know that without You, life will push us around and we will slip and slide.  Thank You for offering Your peace to us.  We can know that no matter what storms or trouble life may bring, You will be with us; we won't be alone. Please help us remember this truth and trust in You.

Encourage students to move away from each other and continue talking silently with God as they put their shoes back on.  When everyone seems to be finished, have them huddle up with hands in the middle and on three say - "God's got this!"

Encourage listeners to repeat this to themselves any time they put their socks and shoes on and remember this object lesson on peace.

We try to check others' faith statements and make sure they do profess Jesus Christ as God's Son and salvation is found only in Him. It must, however, be your responsibility to personally dig into God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to be your first and final teacher on all subjects.
